John Steward    (2025)

Vilonia, Carlisle, Episcopal Collegiate, West Memphis, West Memphis East Jr. High

John was a three-sport athlete at Lavaca High School where he competed in football, baseball, and track.  In 1986 he was a part of Lavaca’s 2A State Baseball Championship. Steward would attend college at Arkansas Tech University where he played football 1988-1991.

West Memphis East Jr. High School: Football, Basketball, and Track
  • 1994-95 Girls Conference Track Champions
  • 1996-97 Boys Conference Track Champions
  • West Memphis High School Assistant Coach:
  • 1999 State Runner-up

Episcopal Collegiate: Head Football and Track (7-12)
  • 2000-2003: Started the football and track programs.
  • 2002 Jr Girls and Boys Conference Track Champions. 
  • 2002 Sr. Girls 4x800 Relay State Champions.

Carlisle: 2003-2006 Athletic Director, Head Football and Track Boys/Girls (7-12)
  • Coached 2A State Champion Emily Carpenter in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs.  She was a two-time champion in the 1600m and 3200m runs.  Carpenter was also a two-time State Cross-Country Champion.

  • 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019 Outdoor State Runner-up
  • 2022, 2023 Indoor State Runner-up
  • 2006-2022 5A West Conference Champions
  • 2023-2024 5A Central Conference Champions
  • Over 35 individual state champions in track and cross country with 17 athletes continuing their careers at the college level.
  • John is also an established certified track and field official.
  • USATF Master Level Official, AAA Referee and Starter at numerous State Track Meets 1999-present. 
  • Arkansas Track Coaches Association – Officer for the All-Arkansas Teams 2012-present.
  • Arkansas Track and Field Board Member 2016-present.
  • High School Coaches Relations 2016-present.
  • Vice President 2020-2024, President 2024-present.
  • Track Coach of the Year 2021: Arkansas High School Coaches Association, NFHS, and USATF & Cross Country for Arkansas.
