During his senior year Russell was an All-America performer in both football and track and field.

He led the nation in both his junior and senior seasons in the 110-meter high hurdles with a 13.4. That mark, which was recorded in 1986, is currently the overall and Meet of Champions record.

During his senior season Russell posted season best of 10.5 in the 100-meter dash, 21.5 in the 200-meter dash, 13.4 in the 110-meter high hurdles and 37.8 in the 300-intermediate hurdles.

Russell finished third in the Golden West Relays in the 110-meter high hurdles in 1987 with a 13.78.
