Malvern High School, University of Arkansas

While in High School he was a Shot Putter and Discus Thrower.  

He set a Class AA State Record in the Shot Put in 1964 of 55’ 11 ½”,  only to re-set it in 1965 to a distance of 58’ 2”.  In the 1965 Meet of Champions he won both the Shot and Discus, establishing and new overall record in the Discus with a throw of 177’ 4 ½’.

At the University of Arkansas, he became an outstanding Southwest Conference performer, winning the Discus in 1968 and finishing runner-up in 1969.  In 1968 he set the Arkansas collegiate state record in the Discus with a throw of 165’ 8”.
