Phillip was an outstanding hurdler/sprinter at Little Rock Central High School.

• 1968 – State AAA 1st 880 yd Relay
• 1968 – State AAA 1st Mile Relay
• National High School All-American
• National Champion 120 HH 13.7
• National Co-Champion 180 LH 18.6
• Equaled National Indoor Record 60 yd HH 7.1
• Won High Point Award in every meet in 1968 season
• 1969 – Accepted full scholarship to Villanova University, Philadelphia.
• 1970 – Member of NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Champion Team, Cobo Hall, Detroit.
