Clarendon and Memphis State
Griggs’ Clarendon HS teams won the 1955, 56, & 57 Arkansas Class B State Track Meets and in 1958 and 1959 his Memphis State University teams won the TIAC (Tennessee Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference) State Track Championships. At Clarendon (1955-59) he was named Outstanding Athlete at Memphis Relays April 1957 winning 1st Place in the High Hurdles, Low Hurdles, Broad Jump, 440 Relay and 2nd place on sprint medley Relay running the 440 leg. In the 1957 District 6B meet he placed first in the 180 yd hurdles, the high hurdles, the 440 dash, ran on the winning 440 and 880 yd relays and placed second in the 100. In the 1957 Class B State meet he won 1st Place in the 440 yd. Dash, 1st in the 180 yd. Low Hurdles, running 20.1 sec., setting a new Class B State Record and tying the overall State Record, ran on the winning 440 yd relay team, placed second in the high hurdles and ran on the second place 880 yd relay team. At Memphis State University (1958-59) (now University of Memphis) his teams won the TIAC (Tennessee Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference) State Track Championship in 1958 and 1959. As a sophomore he placed 1st in the 220 yd. Low Hurdles and 2nd in the 440 yd. Dash. His personal bests in college were: 49.4 sec. in the 440 yd. Dash and 25.0 sec. in the 220 yd. Low Hurdles. |
